Mirror only when the exact blank's transfer instructions call for it. A print utility may mirror by default, a driver may offer a mirror control, and a coated blank may require reverse-side printing without mirroring. Those are different workflow directions. Confirm which surface receives the image before changing the file or printer settings.
Follow the blank's transfer direction
| Exact workflow | Source-backed instruction | Unanswered detail |
|---|---|---|
| MakerFlo Automatic Tumbler Press manual | Mirror the print, secure the transfer to the tumbler, and load it into the press. | Keep this with the described MakerFlo tumbler method; it does not set a rule for other drinkware. |
| Unisub Benelux acrylic ornament, item UN4937-PKG | Print on the white coating on the reverse side without mirroring. | This direction applies to this reverse-coated ornament, not every acrylic blank. |
| MakerFlo leatherette coaster demonstration | Place the printed image against the coaster and optionally tape its corners. | The demonstration does not say whether to mirror the file. Ask the supplier or verify the exact workflow before printing. |
The coaster project preserves the image-side-down instruction but leaves mirror direction open. The tumbler project follows the manual's mirrored-print direction. The two examples differ because their source instructions differ.
Match the software control to the instruction
Epson's F570 User's Guide lists a Mirror Image option in its Windows driver and Flip horizontally in its Mac layout controls; neither is stated as a default. Sawgrass says Mirror is usually on by default in Print Utility. Check the setting in the active job and inspect its preview after changing the application, driver, or printer preset.
Mirroring and rotation do different things. A mirror reverses the layout; a 180-degree rotation turns it upside down. Use the transformation named by the blank's instructions, and check the preview to confirm the final orientation. For the full model-specific driver and paper options, use the printer settings guide.
Check image pixels at the chosen size
A file's pixel count does not set its physical print size by itself. Divide the source image's pixel width by the intended printed width in inches to calculate effective pixels per inch. For example, 1,200 pixels printed 4 inches wide calculates to 300 pixels per inch. This is a size calculation, not a universal quality target or a guarantee about printer output; the reviewed manufacturer sources do not set a minimum artwork resolution for these examples.
Set physical width and height from an exact supplier template or measured usable area. Do not assume the blank's outside measurements are its imageable area. The design-size helper can calculate from dimensions you provide, but it cannot inspect a printer driver or determine a coating edge.
Check margins and imageable area separately
Once the file has the right transfer direction and physical size, compare it with the actual printer path. Paper format, driver margins, and imageable bounds vary by model and feed method. Use the printable-area guide for the sourced Epson and Sawgrass dimensions, including its distinction between media size and printable area. That guide keeps numeric printer limits in one place so this page can focus on artwork direction.
Before sending transfer paper, confirm the exact blank and print side, choose mirror or reverse-side printing from that item's instructions, set physical dimensions from a supported target, and review the final preview. If the source does not say whether to mirror, pause and ask the supplier rather than borrowing another item's setting.
