Troubleshoot faded or unexpected sublimation results

Use exact blank instructions to review pressure, contact, time, temperature, paper side, and color settings when a sublimation result looks faint or unexpected.

A faint, dull, or unexpected result is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis. The clearest troubleshooting source in this catalog is JPPlus's October 2023 instruction sheet for one reusable nylon tote. Its checks are useful for that named blank; they are not universal fixes for other fabrics, coated hard blanks, printers, inks, or presses.

Match the symptom to its source

Result on the JPPlus reusable toteChecks the supplier listsScope to keep
Light or faded imageCheck the tote's time, temperature, or pressure/contact; verify that the press or oven reaches its displayed temperature; confirm the image printed on the correct side of the sublimation paper. The guide lists 40–50 seconds at 360–370°F with light-medium pressure for this tote. Follow the current instructions for the exact item and press.
Dull colorsThe tote guide suggests decreasing press time or temperature, then checking print settings, paper type, and color profile. These are troubleshooting suggestions from the tote guide, not a blanket color recipe.
Incorrect colorsCheck print settings, paper type, and profile; the tote guide also suggests converting design and spot colors to RGB in design software.Verify the selected printer, ink, paper, and software instructions before changing file colors.
Brown, sticking transfer paperThe tote guide suggests reducing time, temperature, or pressure and possibly trying another sublimation paper brand or type. The source does not establish that this adjustment applies to another blank or that a different paper will solve every sticking issue.
Blank sticking to the upper platenThe tote guide suggests blowout paper or a Teflon sheet over the blank or transfer. This is a tote-specific suggestion. Check your own press and blank instructions before adding a cover.

For this exact tote, the guide recommends a standard flat heat press, preferably swing-away, and a foam pad compressed to about half its normal thickness. It places protective paper inside the tote over the pad, tapes the transfer in place, and puts protective paper over the transfer. Those parts of the setup affect contact and placement; do not substitute the coaster or tumbler procedure because the item is also being sublimated.

Check the whole print workflow

Before changing heat-press values, identify the exact blank and read its current tech tip. Then confirm the printer and ink system, paper type, print side, selected color profile, and press or oven path. Sawgrass says its Print Utility options vary by printer, paper, and quality selection; Epson documents separate F570 driver color modes and says application-level color management is usually preferable. Those controls belong to their named systems, not to every printer.

Keep ink families distinct. Sawgrass says SubliJet UHD and VersiFlex use different workflows and warns not to mix the systems. A color profile or paper setting for one does not establish a compatible setting for the other.

For a specific blank not covered by the tote sheet, use its own source-backed settings. The printer settings guide covers device and paper controls; the color management guide explains why one profile cannot be moved across systems; and the ink guide and paper guide help verify exact supply families. The blank compatibility guide separates material, coating, and process claims.

Record one source-backed change

If a named troubleshooting page suggests a change, record the exact item, press, setting source, printer, ink, paper, color option, and date before trying it. Do not combine several changes at once or raise time and temperature by guesswork. When the blank's page and its instruction sheet disagree, or the source does not cover the symptom, ask the supplier for the exact product and machine context.

For transfer movement or a fuzzy edge, use the ghosting and alignment guide, which separates JPPlus tote checks from MakerFlo coaster and tumbler examples. A troubleshooting worksheet is available in the decision tree download; it does not supply a generic settings chart.

Sources and review date

The manufacturer and supplier sources were checked on 2026-09-22 and 2026-09-23. The JPPlus instruction sheet is marked October 2023 and lists its tote item codes. Troubleshooting guidance is paraphrased and kept within that product context; no tests were conducted by this site.
